Deconstructing Gender Norms in Afterschool and Youth Development Programs

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Children and youth are increasingly aware of the diversity of gender identification. They can be positively or negatively impacted by gender expectations within their environment. Messages about gender impact young people’s sense of safety, belonging and voice in a program. AYD programs can address gender messaging and staff can grow their understanding of how gender affects young people’s daily lives. Join us to define gender, gender stereotyping, gender norms and how gender expectations can limit self-expression, academic success and social/emotional health. Leave the workshop with tools to reflect on program practices and how they do or do not support freedom of gender expression. This workshop is most appropriate for professionals serving K-8 grades.
